HISTORY OF THE EVANGELICAL CHURCH OF CHRIST INTERNATIONAL

The Evangelical Church of Christ International, formerly the United Christian Fellowship was established on the 21st day of July 1956.

 Reverend Dr Albert Reid
 Reverend Dr. Albert Reid
Founder

This noble organization was founded by Rev. Dr. Albert Reid who heeded the command of God. It was during his tenure in the United States of America that he was ordered by God to return to his homeland, Jamaica and establish his ministry. God has always given the patriarchs of old, as well as His prophets, specific instructions on particular projects. Rev. Albert Reid was no different. He was given the location on which to commence his ministry.  his is located at 40 Lincoln Avenue, Kingston 13.

Prayer is the fuel that sustains any ministry.  With this in mind Rev. Reid and those who started with him held numerous Holy Ghost directed prayer meetings. This small cohort now needed a place of worship and so a small tent was erected.

In October 1956 Evangelist Jerry Blow accepted an invitation to conduct a crusade. The Holy Spirit moved like a magnet during those nights of meeting and many souls responded to the call of God. Three (3) months later on Saturday December 9, 1956 at 5:00 a.m. the first Baptismal Service was held.

In March 1957, Evangelist Lester Higgins held two (2) weeks of soul stirring crusade.  A total of 15 persons were added to the ministry and they were baptized on Easter Sunday Morning.

“Without a vision the people perish” and, so we knowledge, Pastor Reid continuously sought God for His divine direction.  Fasting and Prayer are undoubtedly the life of the church.  They are building blocks which help to sustain a believer’s faith as well as strengthen him or her.  Pastor Reid, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, commenced fasting and prayer services every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Lord continued to “add to the church daily such as should be saved.”  There was now a need for a bigger tent and so in 1958 this was realized.  It was then evident that the people of God needed a permanent structure in which to worship.  Towards this end, numerous rallies and self-denials were made.  Following this, the property at 14 ½ Texton Road, Kingston 5 was acquired.

In August 1962, a ground breaking ceremony was held and in December of that same year, a corner-stone laying ceremony followed.  Four months later, April 4, 1963 a most excited congregation was in awe as they participated in the dedication ceremony of their newly built edifice.

In 1980 Pastor Reid died and the leadership mantle passed to Bishop Euriel R. Wood who assumed the position of General Overseer of the Evangelical Church of Christ International. Bishop Mervyn  A. Chambers was appointed the Assistant Overseer. In 2014, Pastor Paul Brissett and Pastor Collin Woodham were appointed General Overseer and Assistant General Overseer respectively of the Evangelical Church of Christ International. Sincere thanks to Bishop Wood and Bishop Chambers for their invaluable service to Kingdom building. Their labour in the Lord will not be in vain. We will seek to offer our support and encouragement to Pastor Brissett and Pastor Woodham as they continue in service to the King.
